Resident of Mettur village near Thadikombu thronged the Collectorate here on Monday with empty pots, condemning “erratic drinking water supply to their village for the past two years”.
Neither the panchayat nor the district administration took any efforts to streamline drinking water supply, alleged P. Ganesan of Mettur village. Though the village had a borewell, public tap and water tank, water supply was not made to their village properly as the borewell turned dry.
“We are tired of appealing to the panchayat administration and to the representatives of local bodies. They had not even taken temporary measures to deepen the borewell to augment drinking water supply. Several petitions had been given during grievances day meetings,” he added.
The women in the village had to trek at least two km to collect a pot of water. Water had been available in a borewell in Pallapatti village.
But the people in Pallapatti allowed only two pots of water to each person from Mettur.
“How can we manage with two pots of water for drinking, washing and other purposes?” asked the women from Mettur.
They submitted a petition to the officials and dispersed later.
Even before the commencement of summer season, water crisis had started haunting rural and urban areas.
Residents of several wards in Dindigul Corporation had already started blocking roads condemning “the inaction of the corporation” in maintaining drinking water supply to their wards at least once in eight days, sources said.
In many wards, poor people had been collecting water gushing out of breached drinking water pipeline on the roadside.
Poor people living in colonies on Thadikombu Road, RM Colony and Anguvilas Irakkam area had been depending only on water gushing out of breaches in main drinking water pipeline, they added.
