The national event for the Leukaemia Foundation encourages the bold to lose their locks as a fundraising challenge. Jess raised $800 for the cause.
The event was out on the pavement in front of Fusion salon on Otho Street with stylist Bec Erenshaw doing the honours with the clippers. Instead of the #6 attachment, Jess decided to go all the way, and Bec began by tasseling off the hair to first snip, then shave to the scalp.
Jess’ mother, Jacinta Spalding made the first cut. She stood back and pulled out her phone to document the moment with glistening eyes.
“Very, very proud, because it’s such a huge thing. Not everybody can do it, and I just think, I’ve been affected by my family with cancer as well, I’ve got friends,” she said.
“I’m just busting with pride for her. I love her to pieces, very much. She’s my mate.”
Robyn Porter and Leanne Germany from GIO were sponsoring Jess with a big donation and lots of encouragement.
Robyn’s son Josh is Jessica’s partner, and she recently lost her mother to bone cancer. Leanne said she had lost her father to bone cancer, and when they found out about Jess’s project, they jumped on board.
“It’s amazing. For a young person to come forward and think so much about that sort of disease and bringing that awareness out, it’s just amazing,” Leanne said.
Josh sat with her to count the donations and said he was very proud of her for doing it.
“I think she’s great,” he smiled.
Jessica was very worried about the shave and had said she never went so short before, but afterwards, she felt no regrets.
“I’m a little scared to look in the mirror, but I’m feeling very proud of myself, and happy for what I’ve done. We raised $800. It’s way above the mark that I wanted.”
