: Efforts to popularise leaders and personalities who were born in this district should be taken up for the benefit of future generation, said speakers at a function organised to mark the ‘Pudukottai Day’ here recently.
This district was noted for great leaders like Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy, Theerar S. Sathyamoorthy and eminent writers including Azha Valliyappa, they said appealing to the teachers particularly history professors to motivate students to understand and appreciate the ancient glory of this district.
J. Raja Mohamad, president of the Pudukottai District Historical and Cultural Research Centre, said that the district had played a major role in many incidents that had taken place in the samasthanam jurisdiction during the last four centuries. He said the district made a significant contribution to literature and publications during the post World War II period because of a concession in the prices of paper. “A large number writers and publishers had either settled down in this district or had utilised the availability of paper,” he said.
Thangam. Moorthy, advisory committee member, Sahitya Akademi, spoke on the district’s contribution to various spheres. It was in March 1948 that the samasthanam merged with the Indian Union. The then Collector of Tiruchi district had taken over charge of the treasury here subsequently.
The last ruler of the samasthanam, Rajagopala Thondaiman, settled in Tiruchi. A. Narayanamoorthy, Head of Department of Economics and Rural Development, Alalgappa University, gave a detailed account of the history of the district.
