Modi spoke after Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke in Lok Sabha and assured the opposition that necessary actions will be taken over Alam's release. "There is a legal loophole under which Masarat Alam was released. We are seeking the details," he said.

Meanwhile, the Home Ministry on Sunday sought a report from the Jammu and Kashmir government on the circumstances leading to the release from jail of hardline separatist leader Masarat Alam, who has over 15 cases pending against him.

The statements from the Prime Minister and the Home Minister came after the opposition demanded an explanation from Modi over Alam's release. Congress leader of opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said, "If Masarat Alam is released, it raises questions on democracy. This release needs to be stopped," he said.

According to sources, Alam had around 15 cases pending against him which included those registered under section 120 and 121 of the Indian Penal Code (waging war against the country) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

As many as six policemen were promoted when Alam was arrested in October 2010 from Harwan area on the outskirts of Srinagar besides distribution of Rs 10 lakh cash reward to the cops as well as to the informers. He was carrying a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh on information leading to his arrest.
