Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital in Naiduthota has conducted a free glaucoma screening camp at its Gajuwaka centre.
Of the 56 patients examined, 16 were referred to the base hospital for further tests. The patients were examined by HoD-Glaucoma T. Raveendra. The camp forms part of the hospital’s World Glaucoma Week activities from March 8 to 15.
Dr. Ravindra said that glaucoma was a serious eye disorder, which could lead to damage of field vision due to rise in intra ocular pressure.
“It doesn’t show any symptoms and vision damaged is not reversible,” he said.
Well equipped
Early detection would help check further damage, he said, and added that medical and surgical procedures were available to treat it. Sankar Foundation was well equipped to carry out all kinds of treatment for glaucoma, he said.
Sunday’s camp was to create awareness and educate people about the disorder.
Since it is known to be hereditary in most of the patients, family members of glaucoma-identified patients have to undergo screening test regularly.
Dr. Ravindra advised people above 40 years to undergo eye check-up at least once in a year.
