Women, especially girl students, should be made aware of the legal provisions available to protect their fundamental rights through legal literacy clubs being created in colleges as it would be vital for the nation’s development, Justice Satish K. Agnihotri, Judge, Madras High Court, has said.
Inaugurating Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre and participating in the International Women’s Day celebrations here on Sunday, Justice Agnihotri said the legal literacy clubs being established in the colleges had become an excellent tool for creating legal awareness among the students, especially among the girl students, who could understand the legal provisions available to protect them and their fundamental rights.
“If we can educate the women they, in turn, would educate society and the nation as a whole. When they get enlightened through the legal literacy clubs about the legal provisions available for protecting them and their basic rights, they will take the message to society for the development of the whole nation,” Justice Mr. Agnihotri said.
He inaugurated Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre, established on an outlay of Rs. 1 crore, and said 33 mediators, after 40 hours of training, had been posted there to mediate.
Principal District Judge M. Nazir Ahmed said Alternative Dispute Resolution Centres would be an effective tool for speedy and credible resolution of disputes to ensure dispute-free society.
Advocates and members of Tirunelveli Bar Association participated in the function.
Tuticorin
Mr. Agnihotri also inaugurated Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre, established at a cost of Rs. 1 crore in Tuticorin.
Speaking on the occasion, he said the success of establishing Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre was lying only in the number of disputes resolved amicably without approaching the courts so that it would become a social movement and instil confidence in the minds of the public.
