Incident will bring a ‘social revolution’: BJP MLA on Dimapur lynching

BJP MLA Usha Thakur on Sunday said she saw nothing wrong in the lynching of the rape accused in Dimapur.

Calling it the beginning of a “samajik kranti (social revolution)”, BJP MLA Usha Thakur on Sunday said she saw nothing wrong in the lynching of the rape accused in Dimapur. She also announced the launch of a signature campaign to bring a new law with a provision of public hanging for those who rape minors.

“Such incidents can’t be prevented when emotions run high and public outburst spills on to the streets,” Thakur said, adding that the incident will lead to a social revolution.

“The laws passed in the British times should be amended. When rapists assault abodh (innocent), they should be hanged in full public view. The first such public hanging will deter potential rapists,” she told The Indian Express.

Thakur made headlines last year when she advocated that Muslim youth be kept away from garba venues.

Thakur said she had spoken to few women’s organisations on International Women’s Day and that she would start a signature campaign to seek public hanging of rapists. The petition will be sent to the Prime Minister and the President with a plea to set in motion a new legislation, she said.

Festive offer

“Once they are hanged, their bodies should be thrown before vultures and crows. The rapists of minors have no human rights,” she said.

When informed that the full details of the Dimapur lynching are yet to emerge, the MLA said it is difficult to reason with public when people are angry.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also said rapists should be punished with death.

“It’s time to start a debate about death penalty,” Chouhan said.
