Tasty move! Levenshulme Market Comes to the Northern Quarter

8 March 2015

TASTE of Manchester fave Levenshulme Market is to run a series of monthly markets in the Northern Quarter's Stevenson Square. The first is on Sunday, March 15, from 11am to 4pm, and will feature 30 stalls selling food produce, vintage clothes, crafts, design, housewares and books. A stretch of the Square and Hilton Street will be closed off to traffic.

The full line-up is still to be announced but expect to find Winter Tarn Farm, selling organic cheese, eggs and butter (as supplied to Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume), Manchester Veg Boxes with their organic fruit and veg, locally farmed meat from Savin Hill Farm, bread and wine from Bakerie and ales from the Tatton Brewery – all Levy stalwarts. But the aim is also to include as many NQ indie traders as possible

Street food will include Chinese Jian bing, Polish dumplings and a Jamaican BBQ courtesy of Northern Quarter's Soup Kitchen canteen and bar. Lunch can b enjoyed in an outdoor seating area, with music from Leonard Skully Records (the team behind NQ’s Kraak venue).

There will be further markets on Sunday, April 19 and Sunday, May 17 and if they prove to popular, the pilot scheme could continue into the summer wit an in crease in the number of independent traders.

Levenshulme Market was first launched as a social enterprise in 2013 with a monthly market on the train station car park and a year later went weekly on Saturdays. Recently it was named 'best local artisan market in the region' by Marketing Manchester.

Market Director Helen Power said: “The Northern Quarter is a natural fit for us and our traders. While working closely with Manchester City Council we look forward to demonstrating the difference that markets can make to retail communities, just as we have in Levenshulme.”

Meanwhile on Saturday, March 14, the original is up and running.
