Muktsar: Residents of Kakhawali clashed with police on the issue of getting electricity meters installed outside their homes. Two policemen were injured in the clash. Police have booked 10 persons, along with many other unidentified people, for attempt to murder.
Under its drive to get electricity meters out of the houses, a team of Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL) had reached Kakhawali on Friday afternoon.
As villagers opposed the action, the PSPCL contractor called the police.
"As a police team reached the village, the residents started pelting stones on its members," said an eyewitness. Constables Sarjoban Singh and Jaspal Singh sustained injuries and had to be admitted to Lambi civil hospital. Sources said villagers even took away over a dozen electricity meters and a bundle of cables.
Muktsar senior superintendent of police Kuldeep Singh Chahal said that villagers not only stopped the PSPCL contractor from discharging his duty, but also pelted stones on the police party. He said an attempt to murder case has been registered at Lambi police station against Bohar Singh, Malkit Singh, Sandeep Singh, Pohli, Veeru, Seera Singh, Chhinda Singh, Kashmir Singh, Kanta Singh, Manjit Singh and around 50 unidentified persons.
