Chhatradhar parole for dad’s last rites
JHARGRAM: Chhatradhar Mahato, Peoples’ Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA) leader, got a day’s parole on Saturday to perform his father’s last rites.
Chhatradhar’s father Asutosh (76) died at the family home in Amlia village in West Midnapore’s Lalgarh. The PCPA leader is an undertrial prisoner at Alipore jail and faces charges under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
Chhatradhar’s elder brother Sasadhar Mahato was killed in an encounter in a Jamboni village on March 10, 2011, making Chhatradhar the only person left to perform Asutosh’s last rites. After Asutosh died on Friday, Chhatradhar’s wife contacted her husband’s lawyer Kaushik Sinha. At the family’s behest, Sinha filed a prayer seeking parole to allow Chhatradhar perform his father’s last rites.
The court directed West Midnapore SP and Lalgarh police station to make tight security arrangements on the occasion.
