Constable guarding SSC papers commits suicide

Pune police headquarters in Shivajinagar had deployed Shaikh on security duty at the strong-room to guard SSC examination paper at the school. He was on night duty and had arrived at the school on Thursday night and was supposed to complete his duty around 9 am Friday.

Primary investigations revealed that he had tea at a stall outside the school around 8.30 am and around 9 am, another cop reached the school to replace Shaikh. He saw Shaikh in a pool of blood.

A team of Deccan police including senior inspector Pravin Chougule reached the spot and Shaikh’s body was taken to hospital for post-mortem examination. Additional Commissioner of Police Shahji Solunkhe told mediapersons that Shaikh was attached to Shivajinagar police headquarters since April 2014.

Police said Shaikh was suspended from service in 2010 after he was named an accused in an offence registered at Bund Garden police station. He rejoined service in 2014. Investigators are probing whether the offence registered against him or any other reason had put him under stress.

As many as 129 state police personnel have committed suicide in the past four years and 25 of them were officers. The others were from the constabulary. Most of the cases were reported in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur. Stress, medical problems, and family disputes were some of the reasons that were found to have triggered the extreme step.
