Former physics scholar Ant Law is interested in what you might call the quantum mechanics of music.

The title of the Scottish guitarist’s second release as a lead performer is a reference to the mathematical idea that in order for someone to win, someone else has to lose, and his tunes explore the nebulous, nuanced world of polyrhythm and extended harmony.

Law even tunes his guitar differently from most other players, and has written a book on the subject. But if all that suggests music that is dry or academic, there’s nothing academic about the results.

Law’s compositions strike that hard-to-find balance between tricky and catchy, and the players he has chosen, particularly the rising pianist Ivo Neame, are the sort of musicians who willingly embrace the fuzzy logic of improvisation.
