Communist Party of India (CPI) State unit secretary Kanam Rajendran has called for expanding the Left Democratic Front (LDF) on the basis of the policies of various political parties.

Speaking to media persons here on Thursday, Mr. Rajendran emphasised the need to broaden the popular base of the coalition. He, however, said that only the LDF could collectively decide on the inclusion of parties into the fold.

He was of the view that the public had been able to differentiate between the policies of the political coalitions in the State.

LDF identity

“This has been made possible by an evaluation of the achievements and policies of successive governments. The LDF will strive to uphold its identity in the run-up to the upcoming elections and emerge victorious. Agitations that highlight the lives of the common populace will be organised,” he said.

Even while claiming that the previous agitations of the LDF could not be dubbed as failures, Mr. Rajendran called for changes in the manner in which such strikes were held. “This has been necessitated by the setback faced at the general elections. Forms of agitations that were acceptable to the public should be taken up,” he said.

Responding to a question, he said that the party was never of the opinion that the agitation on the solar panel scam was an ‘adjustment strike.’ However, there were doubts on similar lines among the public, he said.

Stir against Mani

Mr. Rajendran said that widespread agitations would be launched demanding the resignation of Finance Minister K.M. Mani.

“He must introspect on whether he deserved to present the budget despite being named accused by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau in the bar bribery case,” he said.

Party leaders T. Purushothaman, and A. Sivarajan and district secretary P. Thilothaman, MLA, were present at the press conference.

Earlier, Mr. Rajendran paid homage to the martyrs of the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising at the Valiya Chudukad memorial.
