NGCP to plant 149,000 trees on two sites on Samar Island over 3 years

The towns of Basey and Giporlos on Samar Island will be planted with 149,000 fruit-bearing and indigenous tree seedlings over three years to replace trees felled by Typhoon Yolanda and by people, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines said.

“For every naturally growing tree cut, 100 seedlings will be planted. And for every planted tree, 50 seedlings will replace them. We also included the replacements for trees felled by Typhoon Yolanda," NGCP’s Engineering Project Management Department Head Randy Galang said,

The NGCP said it is working with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Community Environment and Natural Resources Office and farmer associations to accomplish the reforestation program.

The larger project area is the 80-hectare Basey reforestation site that will be jointly developed by NGCP and the San Antonio, Tinaogan, Cambayan Farmers Association.

The 10-hectare Giporlos site will be maintained by NGCP and Samar Sur Upland Farmers Association.

NGCP said the reforestation will get underway while NGCP crews put up the 69-kiloVolt lines that will run 95.53 kilometers and pass through Sta. Rita, Basey, and Marabut in Western Samar and Lawaan, Balangiga, Giporlos, and Quinapondan in Eastern Samar.  — Joel Locsin/ELR, GMA News
