Injured Duffy out for a month
Panaji: Salgaocar Football Club have been dealt a body blow with news that star striker Darryl Duffy could be out for a month.
Duffy was injured during the Federation Cup and missed the start of the I-League, hampering Salgaocar’s progress.
Without any quality back-up, coach Derrick Pereira found it difficult to negotiate the big guns in the competition. With Duffy’s return, Salgaocar were in the hunt again but the Scottish striker injured himself again during Salgaocar’s 2-1 victory over Shillong Lajong FC at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Tuesday.
“Duffy has a groin injury. It’s a grade one strain and he will definitely be out for three weeks at the least,” a team official told TOI.
Fortunately for Duffy and Salgaocar, the I-League has taken a break for a fortnight due to India’s international commitments and it will be only on March 21 that Salgaocar will be back in action against defending champions Bengaluru FC.
Meanwhile, Duffy’s ire at being substituted after Salgaocar FC had a player sent off against Shillong Lajong FC was not aimed at the coaching staff but showed his disappointment and frustration at the injury recurring. Duffy, according to team sources, “pulled his muscle and asked to be rested.”
Duffy was Salgaocar’s leading goal-scorer last season and, despite the presence of Douhou Pierre, remains the club’s best bet to find the back of the net against uncompromising defences.
