A fire destroyed a home in west Phoenix on March 5, 2015, displacing a family of three.

A fire tore through a west Phoenix home Thursday morning and displaced the family of three living there, according to a Phoenix Fire Department spokesman.

The blaze produced a thick, black plume of smoke that was visible for miles Thursday morning but no one was injured in the fire, said Capt. Benjamin Santillan, a Phoenix Fire Department spokesman.

Firefighters were called to the home near 71st Avenue and Thomas Road at about 10:15 a.m. Thursday and found a medium-sized home that was fully engulfed, Santillan said.

Crews entered the home and helped the residents to safety, Santillan said, and focused on preventing the fire from spreading to nearby homes.

The blaze was contained to a single home that was destroyed and a team from the American Red Cross was helping the family find shelter, Santillan said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation late Thursday morning.
