Video: Geneva finally gives us something to look forward to.

After years of cuts, financial woes and head scratching the car industry is looking into the future with a great sense of hope. The Geneva motor show is giving us the light at the end of the tunnel.

Car shows over the last few years have been a little on the boring side as the makers roll out their latest eco box that claims 100mpg and won't kill any flowers with the pollution coming out of the tail pipe. It's been a hard time for the car industry and not just in Ireland, it's a worldwide problem with lay-offs and buyouts happening all the time.

Now they seem to be finding their feet again.

I thought Geneva was going to be more of the same this year but I couldn't have been more wrong. The cars on display were the top of the game and the companies were really trying hard to lift the atmosphere.

The Volkswagen Group night really set the mood for the rest of the show, Prof. Martin Winterkorn gave a rousing speech telling us about the billions they've spent on development and even welcoming Google and Apple to the self-driving car race. His enthusiasm spilled over to the other brands that VW own with all of the people in charge giving an optimistic outlook on the future of the industry.

There's some great looking cars coming over the next 12 months and that's good for both the consumer and the car makers because the competition will be fierce. It's this competition that will give us choices in cars, look at the hot hatch selection on offer, Golf R, Focus RS, Civic Type R and Astra OPC to name but a few.

This range of cars will bring a lot more hope to the market and in turn will bring more money into the country. Just take a look at what Opel Ireland did with the recent launch they hosted in Wicklow, more than 40 Journalists from all over the globe attended, drove and stayed the night. In every one of their articles and videos they will speak about driving on Irish roads and the challenges that come with that, this can only be a good thing.

Geneva has brought together the finest cars in the world under one roof and in doing so has started a new bloom in the industry that we all welcome.
