A Calgary woman had to take drastic measures to escape the rising flames burning inside her home in the southeast community of Dover early Thursday.

Just after midnight, fire crews were called to the scene of a fire at a fourplex on Doverdale Mews S.E.

When they got there, they found several residents outside, including the woman who had jumped from the second story.

The woman was taken to hospital by EMS and treated for minor injuries.

Crews entered the home and found the fire was contained to just one of the units in that building, but the flames had also spread to another fourplex next door, causing minor damage.

Firefighters managed to rescue a dog from inside the burning home and administered oxygen to treat it for smoke inhalation. The canine was then taken to an animal hospital for further treatment.

Residents who first spotted the fire say they rushed out to help.

“We were getting ready for bed and had started a movie,” says nearby resident Carla Tatoiu. “All of a sudden, we heard a kaboom and my fiancée David Craig looked through the window and there was a great big ball of fire.”

Firefighters and investigators remained at the scene for most of the day to keep an eye out for hotspots.

There is no word yet on what caused the fire.
