Football: Irfan Fandi joins Courts Young Lions till June 30

Irfan Fandi, the eldest son of former national football captain Fandi Ahmad, has joined S-League side Courts Young Lions for the 2015 season.

The Straits Times had earlier reported that the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) was trying to secure the 17-year-old's services for the Young Lions, essentially the national Under-23 team, so that the striker can gel with the squad ahead of the SEA Games on home soil in June.

Irfan, who is 1.86m tall, has already linked up with the team, and could make his S-League debut in tonight's match against Tampines Rovers at Jurong West Stadium. His stint with Aide Iskandar's team will end on June 30.

Aide, who is also the SEA Games team coach, said: "We are happy to have Irfan in the Courts Young Lions squad as he is a talented and up-and-coming young player. Irfan's inclusion means that I will have more options in both defence and attack as he can play in both positions. Like all other players, he will be fighting for a place in the SEA Games squad.

"Although he has physical presence, the fact remains that he is still young and growing and I will make sure that he is paced correctly to optimise his development as a player."
