Family Seeks Driver in Fatal Hit and Run Crash Involving Miami Woman in Wheelchair

The family of a woman who was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in Miami are asking for the driver to turn themselves in.

"I know you know that you ran into something, that you hit something but you kept going," Sabrina Williams, the sister of Takesha Hayes, said at an emotional family plea Wednesday.

Hayes was crossing the street in a motorized wheelchair on Northwest 54th Street and 3rd Avenue on Feb. 22 when police say a vehicle, captured on surveillance video, ran her over and left.

"The person that did this, I hope you're watching and I just pray that you please find it in your heart to please turn yourself in because what you did to my big sister, she didn't deserve that," sister Kendra Broomfield said.

Several eyewitnesses tried helping Hayes but she died on impact. On Wednesday, police revealed a new piece of evidence: a cover for a turn signal from the car.

Together with surveillance video and this new piece of evidence, detectives said they're closer identifying the driver behind the wheel.

"It tells me that the vehicle that I'm looking for is in fact the Ford Explorer, Sports Track, black in color," Det. Dino Thompson said.

Hayes' sisters, daughters and other family members remembered her Wednesday and are hoping they can somehow find peace while the investigation continues.

"I want justice and I'm not going to stop or rest until the person that did this to my big sister is caught and off the streets," Broomfield said.
