The former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Jagadish Shettar on Wednesday urged the State government to constitute an expert committee to suggest a suitable location to establish an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in the State.
Speaking to presspersons here, Mr. Shettar said several districts had been vying for the proposed institute.
The government had the right to establish an IIT anywhere in the State, but it had to take an immediate decision to suggest the place to the Centre, Mr. Shettar said.
The government could amicably find a location based on the expert committee’s report, he said. Educationists and experts have argued that politics must be kept out of site selection. They argued that the IIT should not become a monument but a live centre of learning.

Mr. Shettar said he was confident that Governor Vajubhai R. Vala would grant sanction to prosecute Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for the alleged denotification of land acquired for the Arkavathi layout. He added: “Governor gives sanction or not, Mr. Siddaramaiah cannot escape. The BJP has enough evidence to nail the Chief Minister.”
