2 students mowed down

Two students were killed on the spot and two others sustained severe injuries when a luggage van hit them near the new bus stand here on Wednesday evening.

Four students hailing from Marrigunta of Yadamarri mandal were going to the bus station to catch a bus to their village.

The speeding van emerged from the nearby railway over-bridge (ROB) and while taking a turn towards the bus station, it hit the students who were walking on the roadside. Then it hit an auto-rickshaw too.

Hamsa (19) and Ajay (17), pursuing MBA second year and Intermediate second year respectively in private colleges in Chittoor, were killed on the spot, while two other girls-- Vedhavathi and Kalpana (Hamsa's friends) --were seriously injured. Eyewitnesses said the van driver, suspected to be under the influence of alcohol, abandoned the vehicle after the accident and fled .

The accident took place at around 4.20 pm.

Case registered

The bodies were shifted to a hospital for autopsy. Police registered a case.
