MANGALURU: Konkan Railway has launched a scheme to collect the waste/garbage from pantry cars of all trains plying on KR route in line with emphasis given by union railway minister Suresh Prabhu in his budget speech Swachh Rail – Swachh Bharat. In order to encourage pantry car operators, Konkan Railway is launching an incentive scheme, whereby the pantry car managers will be paid Rs 50 per bag of 20 Kg garbage of they collect.

This step will help Konkan Railway collect waste generated on trains. On many occasions, it is noticed that pantry car staff throw garbage on the track. Garbage will be collected separately as biodegradable/non-biodegradable waste. Konkan Railway is setting up two waste composting machines – at Ratnagiri and Madgaon. Bio-degradable waste will be turned into compost/manure in these machines. Non-biodegradable waste will be compressed and disposed of separately.
