Shantanu Goenka displays fairy tale-inspired couture

Indian fashion designer Shantanu Goenka showcased his latest couture collection in an exclusive exposition, themed around popular fairy tale characters, Fashioning Fairy Tales, in Kolkata.
The display featured mannequins clad in exquisite ensembles enhanced with guipure lace embroidery, mukaish and antique zardozi work, and a new range of Swarovski crystals in tones of opals, rose patina and gold.
Divided into several sections, the expo opens with an ivory colour-based Snow White-inspired display ‘The Queen of Hearts’. Accentuated with resham and anchor work, floral gara jaal, lace and tiny pearls, the ensembles were cut out blouses and layer detailed dresses.
Inspired by Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Hatter, the green palette heavy segment Mad Hatter’s Tea Party featured long dresses in hues of soft aqua, lake teal and mint with delicate floral and Chantilly embroideries and appliqués.
The Sleeping Beauty themed section highlighted a blush pink dress with flowers alongside several oyster and pale blue-layered ensembles with vintage sequence and thread work and lace like borders in delicate gold and pearls.
The Pied Piper of Hamelin showed a salmon lehenga with cutwork appliqué thread and mukaish work. Beauty and the Beast featured a cape and a kali saree in shades of charcoal and ash. The pink and green based Princess and the Frog story showcased a salmon pink cape.
Speaking to the media about the exposition, the Kolkata-based designer said, “By converging fashion and technology one can play with fantasy to explore new ways of telling a story just as there is going to be a new dress, a new season, a new must haves, there must be new ideas, stories, and ways of telling them and this is exactly what I aimed at exploring through this exposition.” (PB)
