NYPD to assign best cops to special patrols

The beat cop is about to make a comeback.

The NYPD is going to assign some of its best cops in four precincts to special patrols so they can get to know their communities and interact with local residents, police brass disclosed Tuesday.

“The guys who ride in the radio cars are going to be in the same sectors every single day,” Deputy Chief Terence Monahan told a City Council hearing.

Monahan and de Blasio administrations officials appeared before the Council’s Public Safety Committee to testify about several new community policing programs, which include a gang outreach initiative in Brooklyn and mental- health services in East Harlem.

The specialized “sector program” will start next month in the 33rd and 34th precincts in Washington Heights and in the 100th and 101st in the Rockaways.

Each precinct will be divided into three or four sectors where cops equipped with smartphones and tablets will spend their shifts.

Skeptics questioned the approach — especially since the council’s request to hire an additional 1,000 new police officers has gone unfilled since last April.

“My concern is that it’s about resources in my district and in the city,” said Councilman Steve Matteo, a Staten Island Republican.
