Train runs over leopard near Valsad
SURAT: A leopard was run over by a train between Kapri and Gamkhadi railway crossings in Valsad district on Monday night.
This is probably the first incident of a leopard being knocked down by a train in south Gujarat, said in-charge forest officer of Valsad range, B M Patel. The dead leopard was spotted by the Indian Railways lineman at Kapri crossing on Tuesday.
"The leopard was mowed down by the Kutch Express train when trying to cross to the other side of the track.," Patel said.
Sources said the lineman at Kapri crossing immediately informed about the leopard to Valsad station master, who in turn reported it to the forest department.
There is a forest area adjacent to the railway track near Kapri crossing. Therefore, the leopard might have tried to cross the track to go there, Patel said.
Leopard is a Schedule I species and protected under the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
Patel said the leopard's carcass was taken to Chanvai depot on Tuesday afternoon and cremated.
