Two minors fall prey to drunken driving

Two minors were killed, while two were injured after an SUV hit them in East Delhi’s New Ashok Nagar in the early hours of Monday.

According to the police, the driver of the car was in an inebriated condition when the accident occurred around 1:50 a.m. at Ghadauli of New Ashok Nagar where the weekly Sunday market was on.

“When traders were packing up to close stalls, an Innova being driven in a rash manner and at a high speed hit some children, who were carrying water on a cycle cart. The traders present at the spot immediately caught hold of the driver and handed him over to the police, while a PCR van that was nearby took the children to the hospital. While two of the children were declared dead upon arrival at the hospital, two were admitted with serious injuries,” a police officer said. “ Shiva (15) and Daleep (13) died on the spot, while Sahil (15) and Shubham (16) received serious injuries and were admitted to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital,” he said. “The driver of the car, identified as Dharmveer (28), was drunk at the time of the incident. He was arrested and a case under sections of drunk driving and negligence has been registered at the New Ashok Nagar police station. His car has been impounded,” the officer said.

The accident occurred near the New Ashok Nagar police station.

Dharmveer is a resident of Rajeev Colony in East Delhi. He is employed with a private travel agency and used to carry media persons late at night. The car that he was driving at the time of the accident had stickers of two different media houses on it.
