A single bench of the Gujarat High Court on Tuesday mistook retired IAS officer K G Vanzara as his younger brother D G Vanzara, a key accused in fake encounter cases who is currently on bail. The senior Vanzara is practising law after retirement and was appearing for a client seeking bail when the surprised judge thought he was D G Vanzara and asked him how had he got out of Mumbai. D G Vanzara bail condition has confined him to Mumbai.
“I had to tell justice Pardiwala that I am not D G Vanzara,” said K G Vanzara after the court proceedings got over. He also said that his client was granted bail in a dowry related murder case which is, for him, the first success after he started practising law.

Eye witnesses said that justice J B Pardiwala thought he was D G Vanzara and asked him how did he got permission to take up court cases. One of the lawyers who was present during the court proceeding – M M Tirmizi – quoted the judge as saying, “Have you taken retirement? You have been confined to Mumbai”, among other curious questions.
The reason behind justice Pardiwala mistaking K G Vanzara as his younger brother is that both the brothers look identical. Another lawyer present in the court, requesting anonymity, said that he also got confused mistaking K G Vanzara as D G Vanzara. K G Vanzara retired as Director of Developing Castes Community Board last year and since then he has started practising law.
K G Vanzara also appeared in court in a lawyer’s attire during the hearing on the bail petition filed by his bother D G Vanzara in Ishrat Jahan encounter case from which he was granted regular bail last month.
