CPI(M) MLA James Mathew, an accused in a case registered in connection with the suicide of a school headmaster in Kannur, filed an application for bail in the Kerala High Court on Monday. In his petition, Mr. Mathew said he surrendered before the magistrate court on February 27. His anticipatory bail petition was earlier dismissed by the high court. According to him, he was innocent and had not threatened the headmaster as alleged by the prosecution.

The MLA and the teacher had been charged with abetting the suicide of the headmaster.

According to the prosecution, E.P. Sasidharan, headmaster, Tagore Vidyaniketan, Taliparamba, committed suicide on December 15, after writing two suicide notes holding Shaji, his colleague, and the MLA responsible for his death.
