Delhi Confidential: timely dig

MPs are always seen asking for more time from the chair for their speeches. Steel and Mines Minister Narendra Singh Tomar seems to be an exception. On Tuesday, while replying to the discussion on the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, Tomar seemed eager to finish his remarks, and cited the paucity of time and direction of the chair asking him to wrap up. At this, BJD MP from Dhenkanal Tathagata Satpathy, tongue firmly in cheek, pointed out that no such direction had come from the Chair and that he could continue speaking. “Samay seema toh hum logon ke liye hoti hai… apke liye nahin mantriji (time limits are meant for us MPs, not for ministers),” Aam Aadmi Party’s Bhagwant Mann shouted out.

BELEAGUERED

As Mukul Roy bides his time in Delhi, Trinamool MPs are claiming that his “attempted rebellion” has fizzled out even before it began. Leave alone other MPs and MLAs, Roy has even lost the support of his own son, who is a Trinamool MLA from Bijpur, they claim. The admiral was referring to the Pacific region where the US is planning to re-balance 60 per cent of its naval fleet by 2020.

At the VHP’s Virat Hindu Sammelan, followers of godman Asaram Bapu roamed around distributing leaflets that claimed that the godman’s arrest was motivated due to his opposition of Valentine’s Day. “Asaram Bapu started ‘Matri Pitri Pujan Diwas’ instead of Valentine’s Day. This, the leaflet claimed, led to losses worth millions for greeting card companies, alcohol and cigarette companies and condom companies.

IN QUEEN’S NAME

When the British High Commission celebrated Queen Elizabeth II’s 88th birthday last week, the Ministry of External Affairs sent a secretary-rank official to be the chief guest. The Monarch has two birthdays — one is the Monarch’s birthday in June, and the second is the Queen’s real birthday on April 21. However, the one celebrated was not either. The day was chosen since the weather in Delhi was good for an outdoor event at High Commissioner James Bevan’s residence lawns.
