BMC seeks relief from immediate closure of dumping grounds

The BMC had made an application to the state government for grant of concessional lease for Mulund and Kanjurmarg under certain sections of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act. The bidding process for awarding the contract in respect of Mulund dumping ground, Kanjurmarg ground and Deonar dumping ground were subjected to a scrutiny by an enquiry committee of state government officers, and certain objections were raised with regard to the dumping grounds.

“In relation to the award of project at Mulund and Kanjurmarg sites, no major objections are raised by enquiry committee. With regard to Deonar project, the project proponent has come forward with a proposal for change in technology from composting to waste to energy. The corporation is in the process of examining financial, technical and legal aspects of the proposal,” the affidavit further states.

According to Kunte, Mumbai generates 9,400 tonne of municipal solid waste and 1,000 tonne of debris and in future, the generation of solid waste is likely to touch 10,000 to 11,500 tonne per day. As against this, there are only two operational dumping grounds at Mulund and Deonar. The affidavit says since both these dumping grounds have been in use for long periods, they have very limited capacity for further dumping. It adds that the Kanjurmarg dumping ground has also not become operational as yet since the corporation is facing litigation in this regard.
