Teachers fear takeover of medical college

Justice Rajiv Shakdher on Monday issued notice to the health and family welfare ministry.

Professors at University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS), affiliated to GTB hospital, have approached the Delhi High Court against a 2005 Union Cabinet decision to allow the college to be taken over by the state government.

Justice Rajiv Shakdher on Monday issued notice to the health and family welfare ministry, human resource development (HRD) ministry, Delhi government, UCMS and Delhi University, seeking their replies before May 25.

Advocate R K Saini, appearing for the professors, argued that they were aggrieved by the decision of the Union Cabinet, approving the option by which the Delhi government would make a proposal to the Department of Secondary and Higher Education, under the HRD ministry, to take over UCMS from Delhi University.

The plea, by eight professors and one assistant professor, alleges that the August 25, 2005, decision of the Centre was arbitrary, discriminatory and without jurisdiction. The plea has also sought a direction to transfer GTB hospital to UCMS to avoid duality of control.
