MUMBAI: Suzuki Motor Corporation on Tuesday showcased two concepts at the 85th Geneva International Motor Show — iK-2 compact hatchback and iM-4 mini crossover — both of which could be key to its Indian arm Maruti Suzuki’s volume strategy.
The iK-2, or the Maruti YRA premium hatchback, is expected to be launched in October and will be produced in India with export target of almost 50%. The iM-4 concept is a small crossover codenamed YJC to be positioned below Ertiga and is slated for launch in the festive season of 2016.

Both these models are likely to bring in incremental volumes in the domestic market for Maruti Suzuki to the tune of almost 1.2 to 1.4 lakh units per annum.

The iK-2 will take on Hyundai's Elite i20, which has got a phenomenal response in the market with over 80,000 units sold within a year, and the 3,693mm long iM-4 is likely to take on Mahindra & Mahindra's S101 compact UV, which will be launched later in the year.

Both these vehicles are built on new generation modular platform which enables commonality of parts. They will be powered by Boosterjet, a new turbo charged petrol engine, and the cross over will come with SHVS, a new mild hybrid system.

“Suzuki is addressing the development of three environmental technologies, a new-generation platform; the Boosterjet, a new downsized direct-injection turbo petrol engine; and the SHVS mild hybrid system. And the iK-2 and iM-4 being unveiled today will be the beginning of those,” Toshihiro Suzuki, executive VP of Suzuki Motor Corporation, said. “They will deliver entirely new value to customers — value that far exceeds what you would expect in a compact car. That’s the kind of value we believe compact cars of tomorrow must offer.”
