On the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reply in Rajya Sabha to the Motion of Thanks to the President’s speech, the Congress on Monday indicated it would not let the Prime Minister launch a vitriolic attack on the party as he did in the Lok Sabha.
Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said the Prime Minister will have to explain his position on Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed’s controversial statement.
“The Prime Minister will have to explain his ally’s statement,” Azad said.
The Congress asked the BJP to explain whether it has shifted its position on Kashmir, including on Article 370. “I wish the Prime Minister comes forward and responds. What is this tectonic shift that is happening. You cannot hunt and run together… The Prime Minister, the BJP and the RSS should now explain its stand on Article 370. Has it changed,” AICC spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said.
He said that the BJP website still carries article and opinions of several of its party veterans including L K Advani, Arun Jaitley and others on abrogation of Article 370 and also has a photo of the Jansangh founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, who died for the cause.
“So now since the PDP-BJP government is in place, the BJP and the RSS should reveal what is their thinking now about Article 370,” he added.
Taking a dig at Modi, he said those who boast of a 56-inch chest should respond to the controversial remarks of the Chief Minister. He reminded that it was the same Prime Minister who few months back suspended talks with Pakistan after Hurriyat’s meeting with Pak High Commissioner here.
