In what is suspected to be a case of murder for gain, a 78-year-old woman was hacked to death on Monday morning in her home near Periyapalayam in Tiruvalluvar district and her gold jewellery robbed. The killing came to light when the victim’s son went to visit her in the afternoon.

Periyapalayam police identified the deceased as Rukmani Senkaiah Naidu, who lived in Kottakuppam village near Periyapalayam about 50 km from Chennai. She lived alone after the demise of her husband and was involved in farming.

Around 1.30 p.m., Rukmani’s son Jayachandran who resides in Ponneri came to visit his mother and found her lying in a pool of blood with cut wounds on her head. Gold jewellery amounting to five sovereigns that she had been wearing was missing.

Some villagers in the locality alerted the police after responding to Jayachandran’s cries. An investigation is underway.
