ED slaps fine on Shahabuddin, JD(U) leader

Police had seized foreign currencies, including $7,600, 10,540 dirhams and 800 Saudi rials, from the house of Sahabuddin during a raid in 2005.

The ED Monday slapped a fine of Rs 13.62 lakh each on former RJD Siwan MP Mohd Sahabuddin and JD(U) leader and Bihar Legislative Council deputy chairperson Salim Pervez for alleged FEMA violations.

Police had seized foreign currencies, including $7,600, 10,540 dirhams and 800 Saudi rials, from the house of Sahabuddin during a raid in 2005. The foreign currencies were allegedly given to Sahabuddin, currently lodged in jail following his conviction in three cases, by Pervez. The latter had unsuccessfully contested the last Lok Sabha election as JD(U) nominee from Saran.

ED sources said it had served notices to Sahabuddin and Pervez for keeping unaccounted foreign currencies. “If they do not go for an appeal, ED has the power to arrest them. The notices were served by an assistant director level official of the Patna wing of the directorate,” said a source. The accused can appeal before higher ED authority.

Salim Pervez said: “I remember having delivered a packet from a common acquaintance to a man linked to Sahabuddin when I was in Saudi Arabia but did not know what the sealed packet contained. I have said as much in my statement to ED.”
