Accused arrested in 2006 Malegaon blast, later released, dies in accident

Shabbir Masihullah, one of the accused arrested in the 2006 Malegaon blast case, who was released on bail, died Monday evening following an accident. “Masiullah was rushed to a hospital after a compound wall that he was constructing in his old house fell on him,” said Congress MLA Asif Shaikh. The father of two was taken to a hospital in Dhule where is passed away.

Shabbir Masihullah was one of the nine Muslims arrested by the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) in the 2006 blast in a Malegaon mosque and at Mushawerat Chowk.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) later detected the involvement of Hindu terrorists in the 2008 and 2006 blasts cases. The Muslim accused were then released on bail. The case is still pending in the court.

Masiullah spent five years in jail before he was released on bail on November 5, 2011. He resided in Malegaon after his release with his family and took to looking after the family business. Masiullah’s discharge application from the blast case is still pending in a special court in Mumbai.

The ATS had alleged that Masiullah, the mastermind behind the blasts, was trained in Pakistan and had contacts with several militant organisations.
