Blues get Zbynek Michalek from the Coyotes

Zbynek Michalek has not played since Feb. 14 because of a concussion.

The Coyotes could execute a few more tweaks to their roster by the time the NHL trade deadline hits at 3 p.m. ET today, but a trade that's been expected for weeks was finally finalized early Monday morning when Arizona sent veteran defenseman Zbynek Michalek and a conditional third-round pick to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for prospect forward Maxim Letunov.

As an upcoming free agent, this deal was a no-brainer from the Coyotes' perspective since they've made it clear they want to acquire young assets for some of their more appealing players on expiring contracts. But what stalled this transaction was an upper-body injury to Michalek, believed to be a concussion.

Michalek has missed the past six Coyotes games, not playing since Feb.14 against the New York Rangers.

General manager Don Maloney acknowledged Sunday that Michael's absence hasn't helped the process but added Michalek will be "playing fairly soon."

The trade caps off Michalek's second stint with the Coyotes. He previously played with the organization 2005-2010 and rejoined the Coyotes via trade in 2012.

A rugged, stay-at-home presence on the blue with a knack for blocking shots, Michalek's do-what-it-takes style was endearing to fans and much-needed on a defense somewhat short on toughness this season.

Michalek, who is closing in on 700 career NHL games, has played 539 of those with the Coyotes.

Letunov was drafted in the second round of the 2014 draft. He has 22 goals and 53 points in the United States Hockey League.
