Tweeple had had a fun day when HRD minister Smriti Zubin Irani had bragged about a having a ‘Yale degree’, but when the actress-turned-politician was at Hindu College recently, she said she could only “dream” of studying at the premier DU college.
Irani was at Hindu as the chief guest at the institution’s 116th Founder’s Day. She made the students extremely happy when she said, “As a kid, I could only dream of studying at Hindu College.
I remember that I wanted to get through but could not make (the cut). You should be proud of studying at such a prestigious institution.”
Talking about how her 13-year-old kid is better acquainted with the works of Martin Luther King than of Vivekananda, she added, “Both philosophers share the idea that education is of no use if it doesn’t build character. As a country, we are more accepting of anything that is ‘imported’. I wish we change that.”
PA Sangma, chairman of the NE MPs’ forum, was the guest of honour at the event. He too got the students to smile, as he joked about how quickly the public moves from, “PA Sangma zinbabaad,” to “PA Sangma hosh mein aao” and “PA Sangma ki dawaai – joota, chappal aur pitaai.”After the prize distribution ceremony in the auditorium, the attendees moved to the college sports ground, where they got to enjoy a cultural programme, which included lavani dance and a martial arts performance.
