65-year-old Yankees fan will walk from Tampa to Yankee Stadium for charity

Baseball is almost back and this inspiring story will get you fired up for Opening Day.

Richard J. Albero is a former naval officer and teacher and starting Monday morning he will walk from Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. He’s doing so to honor his nephew, Gary Albero, who passed away in the Sept. 11 attacks. He’s also trying to raise $25,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project in honor of Gary.

The 1,200 mile walk won’t be easy, but Albero has a plan.

From Yahoo:

At 65 years old, he knows he can’t be too ambitious. Ideally, he’d like to average 20 miles a day, which would complete his journey in about three months. Looking at the Yankees schedule, maybe he’ll be able to make his approach to home plate before a game when they host the Los Angeles Angels on the weekend of June 5-7. Mother Nature will have a say in that as well, but that seems like a reasonable goal.

You can follow along with Albero’s walk on Twitter or donate to his campaign at his website.
