Heavy rains lash Hyderabad, normal life disrupted; power supply cut

The falling branches took down Internet connections at some places

Hyderabad: It took some wind and a little rain to throw the city out of gear on Sunday. Power went out in several parts of the city with transformers tripping. In some areas, tree branches fell on power lines, just weeks after electricity officials had pruned trees in the city.

The falling branches took down Internet connections at some places. Power was not restored for hours in some areas. In other areas, residents said power was restored after some time but there was an outage again.

Power supply was disrupted in areas such as Domalguda, Barafbagh, Himayathnagar, Secunderabad, East and West Marredpally.

“Power lines tripped due to the sudden rainfall accompanied by wind. Power was restored within 20 minutes in Kukatpally, Chandanagar, Medchal, Saroornagar. In Jeedimetla, our local emergency team has gone out to deal with the issue,” said Pandya Nayak, Ranga Reddy district chief, SPDPCL.

Since it was a Sunday, many of the staff was not on the field. We had to call them up to restore power, said an official. Officials at the GHMC's central emergency cell said they had received a few distress calls of trees branches falling on the road. “Calls of branches breaking off were reported from Tank Bund and Bowenpally among others. Emer-gency teams rushed to the spot and removed them. There were not many traffic jams,” said an official with the team.
