When ghazal singer Talat Aziz took the stage for his performance at Gagan Mahal, the atmosphere turned blissful.

“Ghazal, according to poets, is a form of expression of love in a poetic manner,” said the veteran maestro.

Mr. Aziz was performing in Vijayapura for the Navaraspur Utsav on Saturday and this was his first performance after 12 years in the city. “Though 12 years have passed, after today I feel as if I have come yesterday itself,” he said. In his nearly three-hour long programme, which progressed beyond midnight, the veteran singer sung some of his best ghazals, including ‘khoobsurat hai aankhen teri’, ‘kaise sukoon paun tujhe dekhne ke baad’ and ‘aaina mujhse meri pehli si soorat maange’. Mr. Aziz also sung some of the popular ghazals of the late Jagjit Singh. His rendering of ‘ye daulat bhi lelo, ye shohrat bhi lelo’ captivated the audience.

After every couplet, the audience cheered and asked for an encore and Mr. Aziz did not disappoint them.

Mr. Aziz said that the dome of the Gol Gumbaz is the second largest in the world after St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. “And I have even heard that Shah Jahan copied the structure of Ibrahim Roza for constructing the Taj Mahal at Agra,” he said.
