The Class XII student was hacked to death by eight or nine men near the Mahatma Gandhi Vidyalaya in Uruli Kanchan, about 30 km from the city, on Saturday morning. Police produced the arrested suspects before a holiday court, which sent them in police remand till March 9.

On Saturday morning, Gawli left his home in Chandanwadi in Daund on a motorbike and later picked up his friend Sachin Kanchan (21) — a witness — on his way to the examination centre in Uruli Kanchan.

Festive offer

When he was near Uruli, the suspects blocked his way near Mahatma Gandhi Vidyalaya and attacked him with sharp weapons. Kanchan, who was riding pillion, was not harmed. The attackers then fled from the spot. Gawli was rushed to Shivam Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

After producing them before a judicial magistrate, the police requested their remand through public prosecutor A K Pacharane, arguing that they needed to interrogate the arrested suspects to find out the whereabouts of the absconding ones.

“We have some definitive leads about the other suspects and soon we will nab them,” said Abhiman Patil, Senior Police Inspector, Loni Kalbhor.

Meanwhile, villagers of Uruli Kanchan have announced a one-day bandh on Monday to protest against the worsening law and order situation in the area. The villagers are also unhappy about the “lenient view” taken by the management of Mahatma Gandhi Vidyalaya over alleged incidences of eve-teasing and brawls in and around the school campus.
