Three Army jawans hunt down, skin two peacocks for ‘feast’, probe on

Locals claimed that it was not the first time that such an incident has taken place.

Three Army jawans at Bagmundi Range in Purulia have allegedly hunted down two peacocks for a “feast”. A third one has been injured.

On February 28, three jawans of the 12th battalion of Nagaland Armed Forces, who are currently on deputation at the Indian Reserve Battalion, had shot a peacock and a peahen — a female peacock — at the local Lahoria Shiv Mandir.

According to sources, they shot the birds, skinned them and carried them back in bag. Locals claimed that it was not the first time that such an incident has taken place.

“The birds had been here since August 2010. The jawans often shoot birds but they had never before made the national bird the victims of their sport,” said a 40-year-old local.

On Saturday, Lahoria Shiv Mandir Committee had registered a complaint with the Bagmundi police station and the forest department.

Festive offer

“We saw feathers of the birds lying at a spot where the jawans had skinned them,” said a committee member.

Purulia SP Rupesh Kumar said, “We have received a complaint and initiated a probe into the matter.”

The forest department, too, has swung into action after the incident. “We have taken all necessary steps and beefed up security patrolling in the area against any bird hunting,” said Om Prakash, District Forest Officer.
