BARASAT: A 16-year-old Madhyamik examinee committed suicide after her neighbour allegedly raped her at Habra in North 24-Parganas on Saturday evening.
The accused, Tapas Pal, went into hiding after the incident came to light. Locals gheraoed policemen and launched an agitation on Sunday demanding immediate arrest of the culprit. The accused’s wife has been detained.
The girl was appearing for Madhyamik this year. Her father is a fruit trader while her mother works at a polythene factory in Kolkata.
The incident occurred on Saturday after the girl returned home after her life science examination.
“She was alone in her house at the time as her mother returned late from work. Pal, who used to harass her, sneaked into her room in
the evening while the girl was
studying. He dragged her away to a garden next to the house and
brutally tortured her,” the girl’s neighbour said.
Locals rushed to the spot after hearing her screams and found the accused running away.
“The girl was going to sit for her next exam on Monday. Neighbours took her home and left her alone there asking her to concentrate on her studies,” said another local.

When her mother returned around 10.30pm, she found the room locked from inside. On not getting a response despite repeated knocks, she raised an alarm.
Locals rushed to help and broke open the door to find the girl hanging from the ceiling. She was taken to Habra State General Hospital but was declared brought dead. The girl’s mother lodged an FIR at Habra police station on Sunday.
“We have received the complaint and launched a manhunt for the accused. We are also waiting for the autopsy report,” said ASP-Barasat Bhaskar Mukherjee.
