CM launches Dwarka plant
NEW DELHI: Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday inaugurated the Dwarka water treatment plant. The new WTP will draw water from the Munak canal in Haryana and is expected to end the perennial water crisis in some parts of the city. That, however, is dependent on Haryana releasing enough water.
The inauguration was also attended by deputy CM Manish Sisodiya, BJP’s west Delhi MP Parvesh Varma, and DJB CEO Vijay Kumar.
Kejriwal touched upon the water-sharing issue with Haryana in his inaugural speech. “The high court has now directed Haryana to release water as per the capacity of the plant. I also wrote to the Haryana CM and in his reply he has assured us of increasing the current supply,” Kejriwal said, adding that he will be meeting the Haryana CM soon and would want Varma to accompany him.
The WTP has a capacity of 50 MGD but its output right now is only 10 MGD. Despite that, Kejriwal said, some areas like Najafgarh would receive water from Sunday evening onwards. Once the plant reaches its full capacity, it will benefit 13.4 lakh people living in Dwarka as well as Dabri, Sagarpur colonies, Jeevan Park, Uttam Nagar colonies, Ujwa, Daulatpur and Nafajgarh. Water from the WTP will be distributed to the six command tanks in Dwarka and 3 underground reservoirs in Najafgarh, Ujwa and Daulatpur.
Kejriwal also announced that from March 16, DJB will take over the Dwarka water system that’s under DDA at present. This would make water cheaper for Dwarka residents as no booster charges will apply anymore, he said. The CM also introduced a new toll-free helpline number 1916 where any incident of water scarcity, wastage or theft can be reported, which will be directly brought to the notice of DJB officials.
Varma, in his speech, credited BJP for taking the initiative of repairing the Munak canal and ensuring adequate water supply to Delhi. On Haryana not releasing enough water, Varma not only assured that the problem will be addressed, but also drew Kejriwal’s attention to the fact that many parts of the city still need water tankers.
