Authorities unsuccessfully banned Sunday’s rally in memory of opposition politician Boris Nemtsov who was gunned down and killed in Moscow Friday night.

The rally was organized by the Yabloko party and took place at the central square downtown Murmansk.

“Municipality authorities in Murmansk did not agree allow the action on the central square of the city,” reads a statement by Yabloko reffered to by FlashNord blog-site. The news quickly spread to national newspapers like Kommersant and Gazeta.

Despite the ban, people gathered in the center Sunday afternoon to honor the murdered opposition politician.

Nemtsov’s allies call it a political murder linking it to his opposition to President Vladimir Putin and the war in Eastern Ukraine.

Putin condemned the murder of Boris Nemtsov calling it “vile and cynical” and urges to find the killers.

In Arkhangelsk, the Nemtsov memorial rally took place without banners and slogans, reports the information agency Belomorkanal. The rally was a combined Nemtsov memorial and an anti-war demonstration.
