Excise duty collection touches Rs. 613 cr.

The Tiruchi Central Excise Commissionerate has mopped up Rs. 613.78 crore of central excise duty and Rs. 381.92 crore of service tax till January this financial year, said Sansar Chand, Commissioner of Central Excise and Service Tax here on Tuesday.

Speaking at the Central Excise Day, 2015, Mr. Chand said that in 2013-14, the Commissionerate collected Central Excise duty of Rs. 952.80 crore and service tax of Rs. 441.92 crore.

He honoured the representatives of tax payers who had made significant contribution to the central excise revenue this financial year: BHEL, Tiruchi, which had paid Rs. 135.62 crore, Dalmia Cements (Bharat) Ltd, which paid Rs. 114.67 crore, and ONGC Ltd, Karaikal, which had paid Rs. 101.79 crore.

Service tax assesses who were honoured include BSNL (Cellular Mobile Services) Tiruchi for paying Rs. 96.74 crore, Karur Vysya Bank Ltd, for paying Rs. 41.44 crore and Karaikal Port Pvt Ltd, Karaikal, for paying Rs. 19.46 crore.

Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Joint Commissioner of Central Excise, said that from Rs. 67 crore collected as central excise in 1952-53, the department is now targeting Rs. 4.2 lakh crore.

K.C. Johny, Commissioner of Customs, said that interface with people was reduced in the department with the advent of e-facility.

Manjula Rangarajan, Divisional Railway Manager, Southern Railways, Punniyamurthy, Professor from National Institute of Information Technology, Prafulla Agnihotri, Director, Indian Institute of Management, Tiruchi, spoke.

Certificates were given away to officers who had done exceptional work. Prizes were distributed to the winners of sports competitions.
