6, Flagstaff Road to be Kejriwal’s new residence

Two weeks after he took over as Chief Minister, a residence has been finalised for Arvind Kejriwal. Sources in the Public Works Department (PWD) confirmed that they had been informed of Kejriwal’s decision to occupy No 6, Flagstaff Road in Civil Lines. The bungalow, which has five bedrooms as well as a lawn and an office space, has served as a residence to deputy speaker Amrish Singh Gautam in the past.

“The house consists of five bedrooms. The premises has a front lawn and a side lawn and a kitchen garden at the rear. The bungalow, approximately 5,000 sq mts, also consists of an office premises. The office has one room, enough to fit ten people while the office as a whole can accommodate up to 40 people. While the bungalow has a lounge and a drawing room, the office premises has a courtyard enough to fit 400 people,” a source said.

In his speech during his oath taking ceremony, Kejriwal had hinted about taking a house which could double up as an office and had enough space to meet people. “I will not take a house that is more than what is required,” he had said. His decision came after a furore erupted on his choice of residence in his first tenure after he promised to end VIP culture.

Sources said the house has been lying vacant for the last one and a half years.

PWD, on Saturday, was told to be “ready” in case any changes or additions were required.

A senior official said, “PWD is in-charge of the electrical works, civil and horticulture aspects. However, the house is in perfect condition. We have not been asked to make any adjustments.”
