Gulbadan Begum, Humayun’s half-sister had reportedly written Humayunnama after her nephew, Akbar became impressed with her story-telling technique. “She wrote in a simple style and gave a factual account of what had happened during Humayun’s reign. It is one of the most important historical records available to us from the era today,” Prof Hussain said.

“The other chronicle was originally written by Aftab Gi – which means one who carried the water pot. When Akbar came to power, he wanted to know more about his father’s life and reign. So, he requested his aunt and Aftab Gi, who was supposedly close to Humayun, to write about him. This chronicle has been translated by Sajda Sherwani,” Prof Hussain said.

This is the first time that such translations have been published by a major library, he said.
